It's almost 2:00 in the night and I'm thinking about an issue that bothers me for some time.
To be fair I'm far from being in love with any search engine. I use google for casual searches and yahoo for some deeper searches. From time to time I use also different other engines. I don't like any of them. The idea of internet search engine it's a bubble. One that has to explode one day.
The search engine filters the entire web experience.
Remember Netscape ... what as the other name of the browser ... it was NAVIGATOR.
Riiiight ... we've lost the navigation factor. We try to get there by using various comunity concepts like facebook or tweter ... but that's only a location ... we've lost the road.
What where the three golden rules of a company on the market: Location, Location, Location.
I'm sorry but you don't have that on the current internet. It was lost there in the search engine battle.
There are some ways to get out of this and I'll write down one of them.
I am thinking about a directory on steroids. One that you don't see it directly. A completely transparent service combining a directory linking webpages with GPS coordinates and avatars walking thru TCP/IP based roads inspired from current 3d games.
You as an user start from your own IP. Get out of the door ... whatever you like it to be and see a series of pages passing by as you advance. Those are the web pages of your neighbours. Your real neighbours (well ... in fact that's an aspect that I'm not so fixed about).
You go left to the nearest webstore and order something (to be sent home of course) and continue your navigation to the mall. Access the film library and see a movie. If you want to find an information in few stepa you are in the towns library where you have access to all the available books, newspapers and journals. In a corner could be also an interface to access a search engine. But that's just a simple service ... that's all.
On every corner of the road or between addresses you can place big screens and show ads. Like on any real world.
And remember. This is just a service. If you don't like how the road looks you can just change the service. It will be one with less ads, much better looking frames for the content and so on.
It could be a free service or you could pay for it. In a paid service or a higher ranked one (close circuit or something like that) you will see only glamorous domains, no adverts and only well dressed avatars.
It does not take to much to make this real. We have the TCP/IP addressing system and the GPS. Each web domain is linked with his owner (a company or an individual) address. Each address can be located on a global map. You have the locations and the content asociated with them.
The only thing that's missing is the interface.
But hey .. this is in fact the diferentiation factor betwen the maps that I was talking about. How do you see those maps, roads and how we will frame each location on the map ... those are the questions that each of us has to answer.
Good luck.
